Brazilian Army Develops AI System to Control Drone Swarms

Not long ago, the idea of using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered drones for a nation’s military protection seemed like something out of a movie. Today, however, advances in AI have turned that science fiction scenario into reality for the Brazilian Army.

This March, the Armed Forces unveiled an innovative system capable of coordinating multiple unmanned vehicles simultaneously, creating what is known as a “drone swarm.” This technology allows several drones to operate in an integrated manner during strategic missions.

The new system was developed as part of a national research project focused on robotics and autonomous systems, called EVAAT-GCN (Swarm of Autonomous Aerial and Ground Vehicles: Guidance, Control, and Navigation).

The core concept is to use AI algorithms so that various vehicles—both aerial and ground-based—can act in a coordinated fashion during military operations. In practice, the system enables multiple drones to share information, identify targets, and execute tasks cooperatively.

AI Use by Armed Forces is a Global Trend

The initiative is led by the Army’s Department of Science and Technology in partnership with the Military Institute of Engineering. The goal is to develop national technologies capable of integrating sensors, software, and drones into an intelligent network for joint operations.

With embedded AI, the drones can analyze data in real time, recognize patterns, and automatically adjust their actions during a mission. This type of technology is already considered a global trend in the modernization of Armed Forces, as it significantly enhances surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical support capabilities on the battlefield.

The Brazilian Army’s drone swarm project represents a major step toward technological sovereignty and innovation in defense, positioning Brazil among the countries investing in the future of military robotics and AI.
