GIMP 3.0 is almost here! RC1 is out

Fans of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) have been eagerly awaiting the release of version 3.0, and just yesterday, GIMP 3.0 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) was made available. GIMP’s official site, gimp.org, has yet to publish a news post covering the release, leaving users to discover it independently. This release marks a significant update, bringing major enhancements over GIMP 2.10, with improvements aimed at modernizing the platform and enhancing performance.

A New Look and Feel with GTK3

The most notable change in GIMP 3.0 is its long-anticipated shift from GTK2 to GTK3, the graphical toolkit used by many open-source applications. The upgrade to GTK3 allows GIMP to better support high-DPI displays, improving visuals and user experience across different screen resolutions. This update also opens the door for better future support on newer Linux distributions and enhanced cross-platform compatibility.

Performance Revamped

Beyond the GTK3 overhaul, GIMP 3.0 RC1 introduces substantial performance improvements. Users can expect faster processing times, smoother navigation, and an overall more responsive interface. The developers have also integrated multi-threaded rendering, which significantly reduces the load time of larger images and complex compositions, making it ideal for professional and hobbyist users alike.

Empowering Creativity

On the features front, RC1 includes improved support for dynamic brushes and enhanced integration for extensions and plug-ins, expanding GIMP’s creative potential. The new release includes GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) enhancements, which bring non-destructive editing capabilities closer to GIMP’s core, allowing users to experiment with multiple effects and adjustments without altering the original file.

Better Interface

The release of GIMP 3.0 RC1 also includes a reworked interface with various minor usability enhancements, such as customizable toolbars and updated icons for a cleaner, more modern look. Though subtle, these interface updates bring the user experience in line with other contemporary image editing software.

The Path Forward

GIMP 3.0 RC1 boasts improved compatibility with Photoshop’s .psd files, ensuring layers and effects are better preserved. This is a boon for collaborative workflows that span different software platforms, facilitating smoother transitions and greater interoperability.

The new release also introduces collaboration tools that allow for project sharing and real-time feedback, catering to the needs of remote teams and collaborative design projects by enabling a more connected and efficient workflow.

With this new version, the GIMP team is keen to gather feedback from the community to address any remaining bugs before the full release. Users are encouraged to report issues to ensure GIMP 3.0 launches as the stable, powerful tool developers envision.

While the GIMP team has not yet issued an official announcement on their website, the excitement in the open-source community is building as users begin exploring this refreshed version. This release is a crucial step forward, positioning GIMP to remain competitive in the ever-evolving landscape of digital art and design software.
