Samsung is working hard to change its 6th generation 1c DRAM chip. The company wants to make these memory chips better and faster to produce, so they can lead the way with the new HBM4 memory, which is really important for powerful computers and AI.
This is a key time for Samsung because other companies like SK Hynix and Micron have already made their DRAM chips better. Samsung’s last memory chip, HBM3, had some big problems, like getting too hot and using too much power. These issues made people who buy Samsung’s chips, like NVIDIA’s boss Jensen Huang, say they weren’t happy with Samsung’s work.
Why the 1c DRAM Chip Matters
The 1c DRAM chip is super important for Samsung’s HBM4 memory plans. After the HBM3 didn’t do well, with problems like not working as expected and being too slow to make, Samsung really needs the HBM4 to be a hit.
The main trouble with the 1c DRAM has been that not enough of them come out perfect from the factory, which is below what’s usually okay in the industry, around 60% to 70%. Plus, the chips are bigger than what most tech companies prefer.
Samsung first tried to make the chips smaller to make more of them, but that didn’t work out because it made the chips less reliable. Now, Samsung is going back to making the chips a bit bigger to make them more stable and easier to produce, even if it costs more.
They believe they can fix things and have good news by the middle of 2025.
Samsung’s Rush to Get It Right
Samsung really needs to make these changes to its 1c DRAM chip work because SK Hynix and Micron are already doing well. The problems with the HBM3 chips hurt Samsung’s reputation and made some important customers lose faith in them.
It’s not sure yet if Samsung will be able to fix everything in time to compete with the new HBM4 memory chips. But everyone is expecting to see some results soon, as the HBM4 chips are getting ready to be made in large numbers. The tech world is watching closely to see if Samsung can make a comeback with this important new technology.
