São Paulo Wants to become Brazil’s Game Capital

São Paulo is quickly becoming the center of Brazil’s video game industry. The city’s government and the state are investing more in the sector. They are providing training and backing big events like gamescom latam, hoping these efforts will boost the local economy.

A Growing Market

Brazil is one of the biggest gaming markets in the world. According to Abragames, Brazil has over 103 million gamers, ranking fifth worldwide. Newzoo reports that Brazil was the 10th largest gaming market in 2022 with US$ 2.7 billion in revenue. This year, experts expect the market to reach US$ 3.5 billion, with São Paulo playing a big role if public investments continue.

“This is a sector that we see as holding the future of work and one that we can increasingly enhance in our city. We have seen that the gaming segment falls within the creative economy, which altogether generates over 200,000 jobs in the city of São Paulo. In other words, games are tied to technology, design, art, and various other fields that are part of São Paulo’s DNA,” said Armando Júnior, Deputy Secretary for Economic Development and Labor.

New Gaming Hub

São Paulo is about to open a new gaming hub in downtown. This center is designed to be the main place for the gaming industry in Brazil. It will help in many ways:

  • Train professionals in the gaming field
  • Create business opportunities between game studios, distributors, and sponsors
  • Host game launches
  • Provide areas for people to play games

More than 1,000 Brazilian studios are already creating their own games, showing a vibrant and growing scene.

Spotlight on Local Games

A new game called Mullet Madjack is gaining attention in 2024. Developed by Hammer95 Studios and published by Epopeia Games, this retro-style first-person shooter is set to launch on Xbox Game Pass on March 13 and has earned a perfect score on Steam.

gamescom latam Expands

The second edition of gamescom latam is scheduled from April 30 to May 4. With strong support from the city and state, the event will feature new attractions, such as the debut of Steam in the region and a session with a Pokémon executive—the first time in Latin America. The venue is growing from 25,000 m² to 60,000 m², which should attract more exhibitors, visitors, and business opportunities.

“In this enhanced second edition, even larger, our highest expectation is that people from all over Brazil will come here to experience the gaming sector and the city of São Paulo. São Paulo is the city of business, the city of events, and people come here to enjoy both the event and the city,” Júnior concluded.

With smart investments and clear plans, São Paulo is ready to lead the gaming industry in Brazil. The city’s support for creative and tech talent is setting the stage for a bright future in gaming.
