I been waiting on a few things to get fixed(specifically on Linux Mint) to make my transition to it from Windows 10, so I thought I’d make a forum post on progress so far and what I’ve faced.

My system:

• Ryzen 7 7800x3D
• Nvidia RTX 4070 ti
• (meta) Oculus Quest 2

Ram, ssd, etc are unnecesary as the only things that affect compatibility are CPU and GPU. CPU-wise I have no issues, but as of right now there is a minor GPU issue, namely performance for NVidia drivers isn’t the best.

-From what I’ve seen, Nvidia graphics performance(running the latest drivers available on Mint) is about ~10% worse than on Windows, but expected to be equal(or better, like it is with AMD currently) in the near future as NVidia has been gearing up investment. Either way, performance with my 4070 ti is more than good enough right now(90fps with few to no stutters or dips below that in a world with ~20 people, all avatars shown).

-Compatibility has been the biggest issue. ALVR is trash for NVidia users, so I went with WiVRn, and it works great so far(setup took under 5 minutes, no code, no terminal, nothing). Sadly it uses OpenXR instead of steamVR so openning the Desktop is a no go as far as I could find(I made a feature request in their github so this may change).

-SteamVR is absolutely unuseable, full of many years old bugs and no expectation from Valve to fix any of it, or make it work for people like me who have the Quest 2 and want to use it on Linux. With OpenXR and WiVRn thankfully we got a working alternative.

-VRChat overall works fine, but requires to be run using Proton Experimental(the official version, 9.0-4 won’t load videos properly). I’ve reported the issue and made a note to devs on proton’s github in the hopes whatever fixed things for experimental to be brought, without the need for any commands or extra arguments, to the next official release.

VRChat just recently(around friday) added a new beta to the steam version: it now uses Unity 6!

I personally tested it and performance seemed a bit better, but some friends with slower PCs have reported 2x FPS improvement(one went from 20fps average on a world with ~15 people to 40fps)

So far the biggest concern, shaders not working due to changes in the render pipeline, didn’t seem to happen at all! Neither me nor any of my friends came across issues!

Finally vrc, after years, is updating the unity version!

To get it go to your Steam Library -> Right Click VRChat -> Properties -> Game Versions and Betas and there select “unity-6“

In case you were searching online on whether or not to a certain service is a scam and ended in this post, here’s a list of garbage and likely scam services that will steal your money and give you a virus:

1. MMOEXP – Scam website/service, sent bots here to try and advertise their garbage and left.
2. U4GM – Same as above, probably exactly same creators, spammed a bunch.
3. Rsorder – Posted by the same bot who posted the mmoexp one, its a scam, will steal your OSRS/RS3 account.
4. IGGM – Also posted by bots, hosted in China, its a scam service selling fake game items.
5. U4N – Yet another “trade items here” scam.

AVOID THEM.

These are fake websites that promise either cheap/free currency in games or that “”allow you to trade”” with other players. None of them are official, all likely a scam/will give you a virus/steal your account.

And judging by how often they try and post spam in my forums for their gabage, always with similar copy-paste, I’d assume its all the same person(can’t be a bot, as I’ve a few layers of bot protection).

I’ll update as new stupid people make accounts here to (try to) spam the forums. Obviously I’ll never approve any garbage spam post like theirs.

Btw: thanks google for letting people make 500 e-mail accounts on your platforms to send spam.

I saw a lot of comments and questions on whether or not having a Nvidia GPU still is problematic for Linux users.

The answer is: it works just fine.

At least for the past few years, Nvidia drivers have been okay on Linux and nowadays performance and feature support are basically the same as on Windows. On top of that, the way you update/switch between drivers is honestly easier on Linux.

On Linux Mint For example:

The system comes with a driver manager app that lets you pick which version of the driver to use. You click one > apply changes > restart and that’s it.

And I bet other popular distributions like Bazzite, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc are the same.

Since github can’t stay up half the time, and microslop is dead set on enshitifying it beyond fixing, here’s a nice little list of alternatives to the garbage that github has become.

The most popular SSL/TLS and crypto library just released their new version, 4.0 and its pretty cool so far:

1. Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) support (RFC 9849) – Protects handshake metadata from eavesdroppers.
2. Post-quantum cryptography – Adds hybrid key exchange curveSM2MLKEM768.
3. Negotiated FFDHE in TLS 1.2 – Follows RFC 7919 for stronger key exchange.

EDIT: No longer needed. New versions of wayVR have a setting page to change bindings inside the overlay

WayVR, a popular overlay/play space mover for VR on Linux, has some pretty meh bindings by default, and no easy way to change them using a menu.

So here’s how you change it:

1. Grab openxr_actions.json5 from their Github
2. Place it in ~/.config/wayvr/
3. Check the OpenXR bindings Documentations for what you’d like to change
4. Modify the file you grabbed earlier using it.

Mine, for example, I like using the same I used on OVR Advanced Settings:

Double Click B on my right controller to drag.

So I changed the part that says “space_drag”, under “Oculus Touch Controller” to:

and to show/hide overlay using the Left Controller’s Menu Button I changed the part that says “show_hide” to:

It’s fairly easy to understand how that works, just a bit annoying and scary with how big the documentation page is.

Since I moved from Windows to Linux, this is the setup I ended settling with, as it worked best and wasn’t too difficult to use:

1. Linux Mint, Latest Kernel (newer kernels usually run games better/faster)
2. proton-ge-rtsp: Custom Proton version(only for vrchat, as it makes video players work better than it used to on Windows)
3. WiVRn: Similar to Virtual Desktop/Steam Link. Its the best VR Streamer there is.
4. WayVR: 2-in-1 Overlay and Play Space Mover, entirely Free.
5. VRC-Get: 1:1 replacement for VRChat’s Creator Companion

and that’s it!

EDIT: Just to make sure, dont forget to run

steam steam://unlockh264/

On a terminal, once, to enable steam games’ ability to load/play h.264 videos(aka, youtube on vrchat)

My setup:

• Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti
• Ryzen 7 7800x3D
• 2x16GB Ram
• Oculus Quest 2(For now, will move to Steam Frame when its out, fuck Meta/Facebook)
• 3 average SSDs

I hope this helps anyone with similar setups to pick useful softwares for them in VR

After 4 years of working with wordpress, I’ve come across many good and bad plugins. Almost all bad ones were being recommended by shit boost-your-seo websites.

But some of them are bad beyond a second chance. And this will be a list of those plugins that you shouldn’t even consider installing:

1. Visitor Traffic Real Time Statistics: Full of issues, everything is paid. You get no statistics information whatsoever.
2. Burst Statistics – Privacy-Friendly WordPress Analytics (Google Analytics Alternative): Same issue as above.
3. Booter – Bots & Crawlers Manager: All it does is grab a list of user agents and referrers and check every visitor against that. Completely useless.
4. WP Statistics – Simple, privacy-friendly Google Analytics alternative: Devs ignore issues reported. Had one reported and unsolved more than a month later
5. Site Kit by Google – Analytics, Search Console, AdSense, Speed: Slow, heavy, useless(literally just a google analytics wrapper), will sell all your and your user’s data to advertisers.
6. MonsterInsights – Google Analytics Dashboard for WordPress (Website Stats Made Easy): Exact same as above.
7. Yoast SEO – Advanced SEO with real-time guidance and built-in AI: Heavy, slow, too much hidden behind paywalls.

If you have a wordpress website, do yourself a favor and avoid the headache.
