OpenAI’s announcement of GPT-5.5, a model that can not only answer questions but also autonomously plan, use tools, and operate software to complete multi-step tasks on a computer, sounds like a leap forward in AI capability. But in reality, it’s a leap toward stupidity, risk, and unintended consequences. This is a bad, even dumb, idea for several reasons.
1. Autonomy Without Accountability
The core problem with an “agentic” AI is that it acts without human oversight. If the AI can browse the web, manipulate files, and use software on its own, who is responsible when it makes a mistake? If it deletes the wrong file, sends an inappropriate email, or leaks sensitive data, there’s no clear line of accountability. This is not just a legal problem—it’s a practical one. Mistakes made by autonomous systems are harder to trace, undo, and learn from.
2. Security Nightmares
Allowing an AI to operate software and access the internet autonomously is a security nightmare. Even with safeguards, the potential for exploitation is enormous. Hackers could trick the AI into revealing sensitive information, executing malicious code, or opening backdoors into systems. The more autonomy we give AI, the more we expand the attack surface for cybercriminals.
3. Unintended Behavior and “Goal Misgeneralization”
AI models are not perfect at understanding human intent. They can misinterpret instructions, especially when dealing with complex, multi-step tasks. This is known as “goal misgeneralization”—when the AI tries to fulfill a goal in a way that seems logical to it, but is harmful or nonsensical to humans. Imagine an AI trying to “optimize” your calendar by deleting meetings it deems “unproductive,” or “researching” a topic by scraping private databases it shouldn’t access.
4. Overreliance and Skill Erosion
When people outsource complex tasks to an AI, they lose the opportunity to learn and practice those skills themselves. Over time, this leads to a workforce that is less capable, less critical, and more dependent on technology. This is not just about convenience—it’s about the erosion of human expertise.
5. Ethical and Social Risks
Autonomous AI can amplify existing biases and inequalities. If the AI is making decisions about which data to analyze, which sources to trust, or which tools to use, it can unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes or exclude marginalized voices. And because the AI is acting autonomously, these biases are harder to detect and correct.
6. The “Black Box” Problem
Even if OpenAI provides explanations for the AI’s actions, the reality is that large language models are still largely “black boxes.” We don’t fully understand how they make decisions. When an AI is just answering questions, this is a manageable problem. But when it’s acting on your behalf—making changes to documents, sending messages, or interacting with other systems—the stakes are much higher.
But I bet an A.I. is making decisions at OpenAI so I doubt anyone thought about those… or at all.
