Alternatives to Android

android os on fire in the trash

In the past few years, Google(or Alphabet as they have named themselves) has been doing everything in their power to kill android. From making roms have a hard time by delaying driver release, to trying to kill alternative stores and sideloading.

So for those of us who wish for a better alternative, freedom to choose what we do with our devices and better privacy(because google IS listening, watching, tracking, etc you), here are a few of the more popular alternatives to the default android.

What Are Android Alternatives?

Android alternatives are operating systems that either fork Android’s open source code (AOSP – Android Open Source Project) or build upon similar foundations to provide different experiences, often emphasizing privacy, security, or customization. These systems are typically designed for users who want more control over their devices or are concerned about data collection and bloatware.

Normally any app/game that runs on android will run on them without issue.

LineageOS: The Power of Customization

LineageOS is one of the most popular Android-based operating systems that is not affiliated with Google. It is a direct successor to the well-known CyanogenMod project, which was discontinued in 2016.

Key Features

  • Open Source: LineageOS is fully open source, allowing users to inspect, modify, and distribute the code freely.
  • Device Support: It supports a wide range of devices, from flagship models to older or less common hardware.
  • Customization: Users can tweak almost every aspect of the OS, from the user interface to system-level settings.
  • No Google Apps (by default): LineageOS does not include Google apps or services, though users can choose to install them separately if desired.

Who Is It For?

LineageOS is ideal for power users, developers, and anyone who wants a “vanilla” Android experience without bloatware or unnecessary tracking.

GrapheneOS: Privacy First

GrapheneOS is a security and privacy-focused operating system based on AOSP. It is designed to harden Android against attacks and minimize data collection.

Key Features

  • Enhanced Security: GrapheneOS includes numerous security patches and mitigations not found in stock Android.
  • Privacy Protections: It removes or disables tracking features and provides tools to limit app permissions and data access.
  • Google-Free Environment: While it can run some Google apps, the default setup is designed to operate without them.
  • Verified Boot and Sandboxing: Advanced security features help ensure that the OS has not been tampered with and that apps are isolated from each other.

Who Is It For?

GrapheneOS is best suited for users who prioritize privacy and security, such as journalists, activists, or anyone concerned about surveillance and data leaks.
