With Windows going from garbage to literally unuseable, many are migrating to Linux. And with migration, comes questions we all had at one point or another.
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions:
- Do I need to use the Terminal?
NO. Almost nothing will require that. Old tutorials will give you commands to do things, but they are not needed 99% of the time.
- Will Games run?
90% of games run without issues on Linux. Some better than on Windows. Check protondb.com to see if a specific one you like does.
- Are Nvidia Drivers/GPUs okay on Linux?
Yes. For a few years now.
- What distribution to use?
Linux Mint, Bazzite, Ubuntu, Fedora. Those are the best, in order of ease of use. Pick one of them and you’ll be fine, and always be able to find some tutorial, video or tool that works on them and does whatever you’re trying to do.
- How do I migrate from Windows?
In the question above I linked how to migrate to Linux Mint and Bazzite. Everything else is basically the same, with the same tools.
- Does VR work fine?
Depends on your headset. Meta Quest(2, 3, PRO, etc) all work just fine(Personally I recommend using wivrn). Anything from Valve works perfectly(Index and Steam Frame). Other brands might not work as well.
- My favorite program doesn’t work, what now?
If you use adobe software, or something else that simply doesn’t work: Change to alternatives, companies like adobe are garbage. If you can’t switch, try a dual-boot with windows just to run them.
- Don’t download from an App’s website?
Linux distributions have a thing called “software manager”. It’s like an app store. ALWAYS try finding what you want there first. It will make your life easier.
